What has a side hustle in dog walking taught me about being an artist?

In the hustle and bustle of life, we often find ourselves navigating through various avenues, seeking meaning, connection, and perhaps a bit of extra income. For me, that journey took an unexpected turn, leading me down the path of dog walking, all while nurturing my passion for art. Reflecting on this journey, I've come to realize that the side hustle has imparted invaluable lessons, not just about managing time and energy, but also about reaffirming my dedication to my craft and being an artist.

Passion Perseveres: The decision to delve into dog walking stemmed from a yearning for more canine companionship, fuelled by the newfound productivity from ADHD medication. What began as a simple stroll with a spaniel evolved into a full-fledged commitment upping to 4 days a week twice a day (as well as the two dogs Angel and Demon pop ins ad-hoc) plus the new adoption of 22 month, now two year old rescue Ralph in September 2023. Despite the initial challenges of daily walks, the experience reaffirmed my unwavering desire to pursue art as a full career. Through moments of doubt and exhaustion, I discovered that passion endures, even in the face of adversity.

Embracing Routine: Amidst the chaos of daily life, I found solace in the structure of routine. Balancing dog walks with painting sessions provided a sense of rhythm, allowing me to adapt to the ebb and flow of each season. From early winter evenings to the promise of late spring afternoons, I’m learning to harmonise with the changing daylight, all while catering to Ralph and the art needs.

Creativity Amidst Chaos: In the midst of fatigue and mental fog, I uncovered a newfound ability to paint without relying solely on inspiration. Embracing familiar themes served as a lifeline on days when creativity waned, offering a sense of grounding amidst uncertainty. This realisation liberated me from the notion that artistic endeavours must always be fuelled by an unyielding muse.

The Importance of Rest
: Amidst the relentless pace of life, I've come to embrace the notion that rest is not only permissible but essential. These moments of reflection, intertwined with indulgent film sessions, serve as fertile ground for artistic inspiration. What was once dismissed as a luxury has now become a necessity, as I prioritise replenishing my creative reservoirs. Delving back into my love for films has reignited dormant sparks of imagination, each scene offering a potential muse for future artworks. In embracing the art of rest, I've unearthed a tapestry of untapped potential, ready to breathe life into my next masterpiece.

A Drawing is Still Art: Despite my ongoing struggle with this concept, I've come to acknowledge the inherent artistry in the act of drawing, or more precisely the doodle. Previously confined to the realm of canvas, panel and paper, my definition of art has expanded to encompass even the humblest of sketches. Whether it be a meticulous study or a whimsical doodle, each scratch of the pen serves as a testament to my artistic journey. Through this realisation, I've come to cherish the intrinsic value of maintaining muscle memory and fostering a continuous connection to my art. In the delicate dance between creation and expression, I've learned that art knows no bounds – it resides within every scribble of the pencil and every flick of the brush, waiting to be unveiled. It also doesn’t have to be shown to anyone, it doesn’t all have to be “product” art is not product but soul expressed in paint (in my case, creation in general)

The Energy of Art
: Contrary to my previous apprehensions, I came to understand that artistic endeavours require energy – physical, mental, and emotional. Maybe even spiritual too. The act of creation demands a state of receptivity, one that cannot thrive amidst exhaustion and discomfort. By acknowledging the inherent energy expenditure of art, I learned to prioritise self-care and preserve my creative vitality.

Valuing Compensation: Wrestling with the concept of being compensated for both dog walking and art, I arrived at a profound realisation – it's okay to be paid for one's efforts. The monetary exchange transcends the mere completion of tasks; it acknowledges the investment of time, energy, and expertise. Just as clients entrust their beloved pets to my care, patrons invest in the emotional resonance of my artwork, reinforcing the inherent value of both endeavours.

Art as a Business: Beyond the strokes of a brush lies the intricate workings of an art business – promotion, inventory management, and administrative tasks. While painting remains at the core of my passion, I've come to embrace the multifaceted nature of sustaining a creative livelihood. Each aspect, from website updates to tax filings, contributes to the holistic tapestry of artistic entrepreneurship.

Beyond Monetary Pursuits: Within the pursuit of financial stability, I've learned that true fulfilment transcends monetary gains. Whether through art or dog walking, the essence lies in fostering meaningful connections and enriching lives. Just as tattoos etch stories upon the skin, art adorns the walls with narratives of hope, nostalgia, and resilience.

In the intricate dance of side hustles and artistic pursuits, I've discovered a delicate equilibrium – one where passion intertwines with pragmatism, and creativity flourishes amidst the mundane. Through the lens of dog walks and canvas adventures, I've gleaned profound insights into the essence of dedication, resilience, and the enduring power of human connection. And as I continue to tread this path, I do so with a newfound appreciation for the lessons learned along the way.
