Don’t allow social media to dictate what you do
In a world where social media reigns supreme, it's all too easy to let likes and views dictate our creative decisions. I recently came across a study, children who once revelled in the joy of creating art for art's sake suddenly lost interest when rewarded with gold stars. Similarly, the allure of social media validation can quickly overshadow our intrinsic motivation to create.
Have you ever found yourself hesitating to produce a piece out of fear that it wouldn't receive the recognition you crave? Or perhaps you've found yourself gravitating towards a particular style simply because it garnered attention in the past?
It's a slippery slope, one that I've personally tumbled down more times than I care to admit. Instead of creating authentically and allowing social media to serve as a platform for sharing, we unwittingly become ensnared in the game of likes and follows, risking the erosion of our artistic integrity in the process.
While I make a conscious effort not to venture into the realm of dark, evil horror imagery, I've still found myself entangled in the web of social media validation. My two most popular YouTube videos happen to be a review of acrylic paints and life drawing session painting a nude model. While the latter video felt more aligned with my true artistic voice, I couldn't help but succumb to the pressure to replicate its success. Yet, subsequent attempts failed to resonate with my audience in the same way.
Navigating the multifaceted role of artist and content creator is undeniably challenging. However, amidst the chaos of wearing multiple hats, I remind myself of the importance of staying true to my artistic vision. While trends may come and go, my commitment to authenticity remains unwavering. I'd rather be recognised and followed for being unabashedly myself, creating art that speaks to my soul, even if it means straying from a consistent style or niche.
Ultimately, I aspire to be known not as a one-trick pony, but as an artist whose work embodies the essence of who I am. Each piece I create is an extension of my unique voice, a reflection of my innermost self captured on paper or canvas. So, as I continue on this journey of self-discovery through art, I pledge to let my creativity lead the way, unburdened by the constraints of social media validation. For true fulfilment lies not in the number of likes or followers, but in the authenticity of expression and the resonance it evokes within both myself and those who connect with my work.
