Reclaiming Identity: Embracing Artistry as Vocation and Essence

In the pursuit of a career in the arts, one often grapples with daunting questions: Is it feasible to make a living as an artist? Does art hold any intrinsic purpose or significance in society? Can creativity be practical? These questions, while seemingly disparate, are intertwined by a common thread: the transformative power of art.

Art, in its myriad forms, possesses a unique ability to heal. As someone who has navigated their own mental health journey, I've discovered firsthand the therapeutic potential of discovering an artist’s work. It offers a means to reimagine our lives, enhance our surroundings, and uplift our spirits. Yet, amidst the pursuit of artistic endeavours, there's a temptation to prioritise commercial viability over genuine expression. It's a temptation I've resisted; every artwork is imbued with authenticity and passion, devoid of ulterior motives or deceit, deceit that’s out to just sell rather than connect.

In the realm of artistry, there's an inherent humility in recognising one's limitations. Despite aspirations of boundless creativity, I've come to accept the constraints of my own health. The realisation that consistent commitments may be unsustainable has prompted a reevaluation of my approach. It's not a concession of defeat, depowerment but rather a revelation of purpose—a reaffirmation of my identity as an artist, an empowering statement that this is my true calling, and I will go and do this properly now. The rest was just practice, now let's go forth and put art into the world.

The beauty of being an artist lies in the freedom it affords—the flexibility to embrace both productivity and repose, to operate on one's own terms. As a neurodivergent individual, I've found that my unconventional thought processes lend themselves to a unique workflow. While others may labour over decisions, I thrive in the spontaneity of creation, propelled by intuition rather than deliberation.

In carving out a space for my artistic endeavours, I'm forging a path that aligns with my values and aspirations. It's a journey marked by uncertainty, yet fuelled by an unwavering commitment to authenticity. With each painting I share, each connection I forge, I inch closer to realising my vision of a sustainable artistic practice.

As I navigate the intricacies of entrepreneurship, I'm reminded of the parable of the fisherman and the businessman—a timeless tale of simplicity and contentment. In the pursuit of success, it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Yet, in the quiet moments of reflection, we're reminded that true fulfilment lies not in the relentless pursuit of wealth, but in the pursuit of passion and purpose.

So, as I embark on this journey, I do so with a sense of purpose and determination. For in the pursuit of artistry, I find not only sustenance for the soul but also the promise of a life lived authentically.
