Bluejay Original Acrylic and Alcohol Inks painting on 8.25 x 11.5 approx Cradled Wooden Panel By Bristol UK Artist Chris Shopland
Bluejay in Acrylic and Alcohol Inks on Cradled Wooden Panel | Chris Shopland Art | Bristol, UK
This vibrant Bluejay painting, created by Bristol-based artist Chris Shopland, showcases the dynamic interaction between acrylics and alcohol inks on a cradled wooden panel. This piece was featured in Birdfest 2024 on instagram and marks my first exploration with alcohol inks, adding unique texture and vibrancy to the artwork.
Interestingly, the blue seen in birds like the Bluejay doesn’t actually exist as a pigment in nature. The striking blue effect is created by the reflection and diffraction of light on their feathers—a phenomenon also seen in UK kingfishers as they flash by. Although I often spot them on walks with my rescue dog Ralph, capturing a perfect photo remains elusive!
This Bluejay piece was an absolute joy to create, full of bright colours and lively energy.
Note: Colours may vary slightly due to monitor settings, lighting conditions, and the reflective nature of the painting. This piece, coated with weatherproof lacquer, changes appearance throughout the day as sunlight moves through the room. Unlike some of my other work, I opted for a glossy finish here to enhance the brightness and vibrancy of the colours.
