Ink and Pen Portrait with Ink Splat

This unique ink and pen artwork began with a serendipitous ink splat. I was enjoyed its shape and took on the challenge of drawing a figure around it. Ironically, the splat—an interruption to the figure—has made this one of my favourite pieces. I think it adds a quirky, spontaneous charm to the artwork, creating an interplay between the accidental and the intentional.

The ink splat feels like more than just a detail—it could be interpreted as a shower, a cascade of sunlight, or even waterfall. It invites you to bring your own perspective to the piece. I’m hoping to revisit this technique and create a diptych, pairing this piece with a figure drawn without the splat. Whether that second artwork comes into existence remains to be seen, as not every idea comes to life with the same magic as the first, where the elusive “it just worked” happens form hours of practice, only to be back to chasing this phenomenon once more.

If this piece speaks to you, perhaps it’s a chance to collect the first of a potential series. Its bold yet quirky execution is balanced with an underlying eloquence—a yin and yang of light, shadow and happenstance.

Celebrate the Art of Framing

This artwork is presented in a ready-made placeholder frame, but it’s perfectly suited for a bespoke or custom frame if you want to make it uniquely yours. Framing is an art in itself, and the right frame can enhance the interplay of ink contrasts and bring out the piece’s full potential. Whether you keep it as is or work with a fine art framer to discover the perfect frame for both the art and your unique style, a frame can elevate the artwork, creating harmony between the piece and your space.

Why This Piece Stands Out

  • Medium: Ink and pen on A3 paper, with a playful and spontaneous use of an ink splat and ink washes to depict the shadows.

  • Unique Design: Combines intentional linework with accidental forms - though was it truly accidental if you carefully pour it ? for a quirky yet elegant result.

  • Collectible Potential: The first in a potential diptych, offering a chance to own a one-of-a-kind artwork with an evolving story becoming part of a collection of figures within the same pose but different elements.
